Eagle Days at Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge - Established in 1935, Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge is located in the Missouri River floodplain, 35 miles northwest of St. Joseph, Missouri, on I-29 in Holt County. The 7,350-acre Refuge includes loess bluff hills, an unusual geologic formation caused by wind deposited soil, which holds some of the last remnants of native prairie. The Refuge hosts species of 301 birds, 33 mammals, and 35 reptiles and amphibians. Up to 200 bald eagles, 300,000 snow geese and 100,000 ducks use the Refuge as a wintering area. 

 

 

Location:             Camping at Big Lake State Park, 8 miles from Squaw Creek

 

 

 

Departure:           Meet at Prairie Star Middle School; Saturday, December 6th @ 6:45pm.

We will depart PSMS promptly at 7:00am

                               (We will return home after we break camp Sunday morning)

Cost:         ADULTS:      $20.00                                    (please pay Troop Treasurer)

                   SCOUTS:      $10.00 (plus patrol costs)

 

 

Activities:

Saturday

·        Depart PSMS at 7:00am

·        Arrive at Big Lake State Park at 9:00am

·        Setup camp

·        Eagle Days at 10:00am

·        Return to camp at 2:00pm

·        Dutch Oven Meals at 5:00pm

·        Campfire

Sunday

·        Breakfast / Chapel / Break Camp

·        Depart for home

 

 

Food/Cooking Format: 

·        Saturday Lunch – Everyone bring a sack lunch.  This needs to be carried to Squaw Creek, so a daypack might be a good idea.

·        Saturday Supper:

Ø        Patrols MUST use Dutch ovens for this meal (Patrols need to bring

charcoal)

Ø        Adults will cook & eat as the “Old Goat” Patrol.

·        Sunday Breakfast:

Ø        Patrols plan and prepare a “hot” breakfast.

Ø        Adults will cook & eat as the “Old Goat” Patrol.

 

Troop Policy: NO Lighter Fluid, “Match-light”, or accelerant to be used. Charcoal chimneys are provided by the Troop

 

Patrols need to bring their own charcoal and/or firewood.  There is no firewood available at the campgrounds.

 

Uniform:  Class “A” shirt required while at Squaw Creek

 

Equipment Needed: You will need cold weather clothing, extra dry clothing to change into at night (socks, sweats, t-shirts, stocking hats, etc.), cold weather sleeping bag, ground mat, eating mess kit, and rain gear. Patrols need to work together to make sure that patrol tents and cooking boxes (cleaned and properly stocked) are brought to camp by assigned patrol members. .  If you have Patrol Equipment (tents, tarps, stoves, cooking equipment), make sure it makes it to this campout even if you aren’t attending. Call your patrol leader, if he doesn’t call you by Wednesday, December 3rd.  Patrol Quartermasters must speak to the Troop Quartermaster, Greg Spies; quartermaster@bsatroop10.org 913-338-4354; if ANY additional equipment is needed (i.e. cooking grates, bricks, tent poles, tent pegs, tarps, tents) Paper goods & cups will not be provided.

Coordinating Patrol: The coordinating patrol will be the Pedro Patrol. One of the parents of an Pedro Patrol Scout will need to drive the troop truck to and from the campout. The Pedro Patrol Scouts and ALL quartermasters are responsible to load the truck on Friday, December 5th at 6:00pm and unload the troop truck on Sunday morning.

 

Directions:
Big Lake State Park is approximately 75 miles north of the Kansas City International Airport. Take 135th Street west to Hwy 69 north.  Take Hwy 69 north to I-435 west.  Travel west then North on I-435 until it merges with I-29 north. Travel north on I-29 (about 62 miles) to Exit 79 (U.S. Hwy. 159). Proceed west  (left) on U.S. Hwy. 159 for approximately nine miles to Hwy. 111. Turn right onto Hwy. 111 and travel one mile to the park entrance. 

Squaw Creek Wildlife Refuge is 8 miles east on Hwy 159.
